Gadsden announces special transit fares for eligible residents

The City of Gadsden is announcing new special transit fares to better serve senior citizens and those on Medicaid, along with announcing a public meeting concerning trolley routes. “This is an effort to assist our citizens on a fixed income,” said Mayor Craig Ford. “Many residents depend on our transportation services to make it to medical appointments, purchase groceries or receive a meal, and it’s important that we make those everyday needs more accessible to them. With this change, we hope to lower the barriers for senior citizens and those on Medicaid to receive services to enhance their quality of life in Gadsden.”The discounted rates for seniors and those on Medicaid will be $0.25 for the trolley and $0.50 for DART. The new rates will take effect on Jan. 1, 2023. Standard rates of $1 for trolley service and $2 for DART will continue to apply for those who are not eligible for the discounted rate.Eligible riders may inquire about the discounted rates by contacting the city’s transportation department at 256-543-3278. More information will be made available as the rates take effect in the new year.City officials are also planning to hold a public meeting concerning trolley routes on Monday, Dec. 12, 2022, and the public is encouraged to attend. The meeting will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the main branch of the Gadsden Public Library, 254 South College St.
