13

The fire-breathing will be kept under control, but the competition will be hot when Dragon Boat racing returns to the Coosa River on Aug. 20, 2022 at Riverwalk Park. The purpose of the 9th Habitat Dragon Boat Festival is to raise funds to continue building simple, decent, affordable houses in Etowah County.

Registration is OPEN now and until Aug. 5th. Dragon Boat racing, the ultimate team-building sport, racing 250 meters on the Coosa River. Teams consist of 20 paddlers, 1 drummer and a steersman (plus 3 alternates). The key to success is working and paddling together. Each team has a drummer beating the cadence for the team. It’s exciting, it’s fun, and for spectators, it’s free. Come cheer on your favorite team on Saturday, Aug. 20th behind Chili’s on Rainbow Dr. in Gadsden starting at 8:45 a.m. For more information call 256.543.1898 or visit www.habitatdragonboat.com.

There will be food vendors, drummer’s parade, kid’s craft activities, and presentation of awards for best drummer costume, best team spirit, best tent, and best team t-shirt before the final races start.

Admission and parking are FREE. Shuttles run from convention hall and Moragne Park to cross the street safely. Spectators are welcome to bring chairs and a canopy tent, and enjoy the concessions. Boat owners are invited to anchor out in the water in the no-wake zone and enjoy the races, too.
