Gadsden Surgery Center, a multi-specialty outpatient medical facility in Gadsden, Alabama, celebrated its first total knee replacement surgery in an outpatient setting in June 2022. The surgery was performed at the Gadsden Surgery Center. Lee Wilson, MD—a local orthopedic surgeon who specializes in joint replacement surgery— performed the procedure.
The new outpatient joint replacement program is the first program of its kind in Etowah County to provide specialized joint replacement surgery in an ambulatory care center. As part of this program, Dr. Wilson sees patients at the Gadsden Surgery Center.
"A total knee replacement as an outpatient in the ambulatory surgery center is a very real option and is now being performed at the Gadsden Surgery Center,” stated Dr. Wilson, an orthopedic surgeon at Northeast Orthopedics. “Being able to have a total knee replacement in an ambulatory setting gives patients the option to return to the comfort of their own home and rest in their own bed on the same day of surgery. We have had great success at the Gadsden Surgery Center starting the Total Joint Program, and we look forward to expanding this service outside of knees in the very near future.”
Tim Donovan was Dr. Wilson’s patient for this first outpatient knee replacement procedure. After consultation with Dr. Wilson, Mr. Donovan received communication regarding details for his surgery from Dr. Wilson’s physician assistant and the clinical director of the Gadsden Surgery Center. Mr. Donovan was given the chance to visit the surgery center before his surgery to receive patient education, tour the center, complete his lab work, and meet with his anesthesiologist.
“I truly trusted everyone that I met. That's the best feeling that a patient can have is total trust in your surgeon and the team that is taking care of you. The day of surgery was no different. I was met with bright professionals who took great care of me from pre-op through my final recovery.”
We spoke with Mr. Donovan four weeks after his surgery, and he continued to speak positively his experience at Gadsden Surgery Center.
“The communication between the staff and the willingness to help each other with their patients is not that common anymore,” states Mr. Donovan. “But it is at your surgery center. This is a model that you should all be proud of. I am so thankful and feel so blessed to have been treated at you center.”
