The Alabama Community College Conference named Kintavious Dozier Athlete of the Week on Nov. 15. The sophomore plays guard for Gadsden State Community College men’s basketball team.
“This is a great accolade, and I’m honored to receive it,” he said. “But, it’s not about me. I’m here to win with my team. I appreciate the love and support I receive from everyone at Gadsden State, and I appreciate that the ACCC noticed me but, at the end of the day, it’s all about our team and winning.”
Dozier, a native of Lanett, Ala., has been instrumental in Gadsden State’s strong start to the 2022-23 season. They have won the first four games, including a 119-52 thrashing of Talladega College, and they narrowly lost the most recent game on Thursday to Chattahoochee Valley Community College 63-59.
Dozier averages 30 points a game and 13 rebounds. He is shooting 50 percent from the field.
“Dozier is a very nice young man as well as a good basketball player,” said Deddric Tarver, head coach of the Gadsden State Cardinals men’s basketball team. “He works hard on and off the court, which helps our team. He’s been a great leader.”
Dozier said he chose to begin his collegiate career at Gadsden State because of the relationships he formed with the coaches during his senior season at Lanett High School.
“I knew I wanted to go the next step and I felt like I could be successful with the coaches at Gadsden State,” he said. “They’re great to me. They’ve always encouraged me but they keep it real with me. They want me to do great things on the court but they also want to keep me in check.”
Coach Tarver said he values his relationship with his players and wants to see them succeed. Part of his job is developing good basketball players and even greater men.
“Dozier and I have had a great relationship since he stepped foot on our campus,” he said. “We talk on a daily basis. It’s important to encourage and coach him and his teammates. We are both looking forward to an exciting season.”
Dozier recently signed with Grambling State University. He will report to the university following his May graduation, where he will receive an Associate in Science in General Studies from Gadsden State.
“I am excited about playing at Grambling but I’m going to miss Gadsden State,” he said. “I definitely have felt a lot of love here. I have met a lot of amazing people. They make Gadsden State what it is. They’ve supported me since I arrived on campus. It’s been a great experience.”
Dozier is the third Gadsden State student-athlete to be named ACCC Athlete of the Week for this academic year. Bliss Brown of Southside, a member of the Cardinal volleyball team, received the honor on Oct. 4, and Ashton Vann of Ashville, a cross country runner, received the accolade on Sept. 21 following the North Alabama Showcase.
