January: 15 businesses registered in cities found in Etowah County

There were 15 businesses that registered in cities within Etowah County during January, according to the Alabama Secretary of State.

This is 48 percent less than the month before, when 29 businesses were registered.

Gadsden registered the most businesses in Etowah County.

More than 99 percent of Alabama's businesses are considered small, with more than 47 percent of Alabama's employees working for a small business, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

A Civic Economics study found $100 spent at a locally-owned business puts $47 back into the local economy while the total is just $13 for non-local businesses.
